Folder of papers produced in support of his application to the Local Tribunal in Glasgow on 7 November 1940 for exemption from military service on moral grounds comprising 8 ms statements from friends and colleagues testifying to the sincerity of his pacifist beliefs and their long standing nature, a printed syllabus for the Glasgow Junior International Club for 1928-29 during which time he was chairman and an ms letter (6pp) written to his father in April 1916 confirming that at that time he also held similar views to his son, a ts statement (2pp) of his views submitted to the Tribunal in advance (June 1940), a second (2pp) to be read by him at the Tribunal (November 1940), a carbon copy of the proceedings of the Local Tribunal (Form NS 14) which concluded by recognising his objection and ordering him to undertake agricultural work, a copy of the proceedings of his Appeal Tribunal (April 1941) (Forms AT 8 and AT 7) which amended the original order and ordered him instead to continue working in the Sheriff Court Service and undertake voluntary ARP or AFS work as well and an ms letter (2pp) written to him in January 1941 by a friend who was serving in the Royal Corps of Signals referring briefly to his training and the conditions of his life in the army
