Ms diary (97pp), June 1941 - March 1943, with an addition written in November - December 1979, recording his service as an Officer with A Squadron, 44th Battalion The Royal Tank Regiment, 4th Armoured Brigade, in the Western Desert, June 1941 - May 1942, including: his experiences at Sidi Bishr Camp, Egypt, June - July 1941, of training at Matruh behind the front line, July - November 1941; Operation CRUSADER, November 1941 - January 1942, notably the battles for Gambut, November 1941, for Belhamed and Zaafran, November - December 1941, and for Bardia, January 1942; on being wounded in the 150th Brigade Box on the Gazala Line, May 1942, and evacuated to Orribi Hospital, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, March 1943; describing his training; entertainment; living conditions; and reactions to battle; and mentioning General (later Lord) B C Freyberg at Belhamed, December 1941. Also included are photocopies of transcripts of the diary (18pp) and an account (3pp), undated, by Captain L H Lees, 44th RTR, of the action at Belhamed, November - December 1941, and the rearguard action by Major Ling which permitted General Freyberg's New Zealand Division to break-out to Bir Gibni.
