Very detailed Midshipman's Journal (138pp with many enclosures) for January - June 1941 beginning with a retrospective account of his service as a midshipman in the cruiser HMS SOUTHAMPTON, including her operations in the Norwegian campaign, from January 1940 till she was sunk, with heavy loss of life, by Axis aircraft in the Mediterranean in January 1941, and then covering his service in the battleship HMS WARSPITE, the flagship of Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, the Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet, with very good descriptions of her operations, including the Battle of Matapan (28 March), the Mediterranean Fleet's bombardment of Tripoli (21 April), their part in the battle for Crete (May) and the threat posed by the Axis air forces, as well as long comments on the progress of the war, particularly in the Middle East, and some interesting and strongly worded criticisms of certain local aspects of the Royal Navy's conduct of operations in the Mediterranean which incurred his Captain's displeasure. The Journal concludes with an account of his voyage home, via the Cape and New York, in the troopship EMPRESS OF ASIA (June - September 1941).
