700 ms and ts letters written to his fiance and later wife, while serving as a stretcher bearer in 2nd Battalion, London Rifle Brigade (after January 1941 became 8th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade)(29th Armoured Brigade, 11th Armoured Division) at Northolt Aerodrome, October - December 1939, in London, January - June 1940, in Wales, August - December 1940, Uttoxeter, December 1940 - March 1941, Thirsk, April - August 1941, Yorkshire, August 1941 - May 1942, Brighton, May - August 1942, East Anglia, August 1942 - June 1943, then in Normandy, June - November 1944, in which he briefly describes his duties, living conditions, his training, and entertainment, and while in France tells her of their reception in liberated towns and about civilian conditions in France and Belgium, but mainly discusses their romance and their wedding plans; together with 225 ms letters written in reply by his fiance, July 1939 - February 1942, describing her teacher training course at Portsmouth College, which was evacuated first to Cambridge, then to Chichester, and the bombing of Cambridge, Portsmouth, and New Southgate where she lived, as well as discussing rationing, and the problems of marrying in wartime.
