Photocopy of his ms memoir (219pp and ts transcription 73pp), written in November 1917, of his service as a NCO in the 3/5th Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders, Britain, summer 1915 - November 1916, and as an officer in the 1/6th Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders, 152nd Brigade, 51st Division, France, August - November 1917, including: his experiences of Army life; training in Scotland, including arrest and acquittal after four prisoners escaped from the Guard House, September - November 1915, at Ripon, Yorkshire, November 1916, and at Etaples, France, contrasting the easy life for NCOs with the harsh regime for the men, December 1916; selection for a commission, December 1916; officer training at the 10th Officer Cadet Battalion, Gailes Camp, Ayrshire, January - April 1917, and the 4th Reserve Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders, Ripon, Yorkshire, April - August 1917; trench warfare as Battalion Intelligence Officer, August - October 1917, including a parade and lunch held in honour of Sergeant A Edwards VC; attendance at the Corps School course on the Stokes 3" Trench Mortar, October 1917; and a lecture by a Divisional Signalling Officer on the carrier pigeon in war. Also included are his photograph and a photocopy of a letter to his parents in the event of his death, November 1917.
