67 ms letters (with ts transcription, 78pp) to his parents, while serving in the Coldstream Guards, October 1943 - May 1945, describing his training at the Guards Depot, Caterham, October 1943; Pirbright Camp, Woking, Surrey (Pre-OCTU), November - December 1943; 14 Platoon, C Company, 161 OCTU, Royal Military College, Mons Barracks, Aldershot, February 1944; No 1 Battlecamp (OCTU), Capel Curing, North Wales (accepted for commission in the Coldstream Guards), April 1944; Officers Training Battalion, Coldstream Guards, Pirbright Camp, June 1944; Street Fighting Wing, London District School of Tactics, Chelsea Barracks, June - July 1944; and service with V Company, 40 Reinforcement Holding Unit, 101 Reinforcement Group, Belgium, December 1944; as a Platoon Commander in 4th Company, 5th Battalion Coldstream Guards (32nd Guards Brigade, Guards Armoured Division), January - May 1945, which included breaching the Siegfried Line and clearing the Reichswald (Operation Veritable), crossing the Rhine, the Battle of Wesel, and the subsequent advance across Germany; and civilian life in Cologne, July 1945.
