Microfilm copy of a collection of 44 ms letters to his family covering his service in Normandy and North West Europe as a company commander in the 5th Battalion The Dorsetshire Regiment (130th Infantry Brigade, 43rd Division) from June - July 1944 and as Commanding Officer of the 4th Dorsets (in the same Brigade) from July 1944 till his capture near Arnhem on 25 - 26 September 1944, together with a number of letters from other officers, including General 'Boy' Browning, 1944 - 1987 referring to his period of command of the 4th Dorsets, presscuttings concerning his gallantry and capture at Arnhem and a few items from his time as a prisoner of war in Oflags XIIB and 79 in Germany (October 1944 - April 1945). His letters are especially informative about his morale and that of his units, the fighting qualities of the opposing German soldiers and the attitudes of German prisoners, conditions in France and Belgium and relations with the local population.
