Ms diary/memoir (372pp) of his army service, 1 September 1914 - 22 February 1919, beginning with his enlistment and training in the 8th (Service) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment (54th Brigade, 18th Division), September 1914 - July 1915, then service in France as a signaller in the Somme sector, July 1915 - March 1917 including the Battle of the Somme, and the Battle of Bullecourt, May 1917; in the Ypres Salient, July - November 1917, including the 3rd Battle of Ypres, after which he transferred to 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment (35th Brigade, 12th Division), February - May 1918, and faced the German advance near Bullecourt, finally transferring again to 35th Brigade HQ Signals (although officially attached to 1/1st Cambridgeshire Regiment), May 1918 - January 1919, where he was gassed, and took part in the Allied advance before greeting the news of the Armistice and being demobilised while on leave in February 1919.
