Content description
4 sub-files of correspondence and documents relating to a Merchant Navy exhibition proposed for the Museum in 1953 (later cancelled through lack of exhibits though a small permanent display was created). Consists of:
1) General: General correspondence relating to a proposed Merchant Navy exhibition to be held at the Museum in 1953. Includes article on Museum's Merchant Navy exhibits from Merchant Navy Journal, correspondence with Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation regarding attempts to acquire arctic convoy kits and photographs, additions to small Merchant Navy display in Museum, notes on Merchant Navy badge, correspondence with Merchant Navy Officer's Federation regarding histories of ships and possible exhibits, query over place of 'merit' for certain forms of life-saving equipment, correspondence with Ministry of Transport regarding proposed exhibition, request to Chamber of Shipping for help with exhibition, correspondence with National Union of Seamen regarding possible help with exhibition, report of the Council of Officer's (Merchant Navy) Federation Ltd containing reference to the proposed exhibition.
2) Offers: Letters offering help and loans of exhibits for the proposed Merchant Navy exhibition. Includes offers of plaques, models, portions of vessels, drawing of the Tower Hill Memorial, series of books entitled 'Touching the Adventures', artworks, photographs and items from Dummy fleet, relics and paintings of San Demetrio and Ohio, flags, shell, yacht's bell, offers from 'the Watch Ashore' Merchant Navy body.
3) Material Received: Correspondence regarding material received for the Merchant Navy exhibition. Includes relic of SS Donegal, Red Ensign from 'Masroba', framed reproduction of VC given to Captain A Bisset Smith of the Otaki, four models of life-rafts and floats.
4) Press Cuttings: Press cuttings and reports on the proposed Merchant Navy exhibition at the Museum. Mostly requesting exhibits, including a more detailed article on this from 'Trident' magazine. Also correspondence with the press regarding possible press appeals for exhibits.
