HMS Belfast and the Korean War

A View from the Bridge

Session Outline

This session can focus on fine art and sketching or photography. Students explore how the River Thames, Pool of London and Navy ships have been represented in art or photography. They then use HMS Belfast's unique design and location as inspiration for sketch book development or photography projects during their time on board.

Skills

  • Assess works of art or photographs using set criteria and specialist language
  • Identify successful photography or sketching techniques to use during a visit to HMS Belfast
  • Experiment with a variety of materials and approaches to develop sketchbook skills or photography projects on themes such as shape, pattern, colour and texture

Activities

  • Critique historical paintings, drawings or photographs of the River Thames, Pool of London and Navy ships
  • Work on the deck of HMS Belfast to take inspiration from the Pool of London skyline or work in the ship’s interior to take inspiration from the dynamic spaces and design

We recommend that this session is followed by at least a 45 minute self-guided visit, so that students can work independently on some of the approaches covered in the session.

Students will be required to bring their own sketchbooks or digital cameras.
