In Memoriam: Remembering the Great War

The Imperial War Museum in association with the Royal Philharmonic Society are giving composition and music students an exciting chance to mark the ninetieth anniversary and become part of the Museum’s Collections by writing a piece of music for a string quartet on the theme of In Memoriam.

Five finalists will have their pieces professionally recorded by the Solaris Quartet. These recordings will become part of the In Memoriam exhibition, where it is expected that over half a million visitors will be able to listen to and enjoy them. After the exhibition closes in September 2009, the pieces of music will be kept in the Museum’s Digital Sound Archive where they can be accessed and listened to by the public at the Museum and online.

A panel of distinguished judges will pick one overall winning piece and award a prize of £500 to the composer.

Pieces should be written for string quartet and be 8 - 12 minutes long. The deadline for submissions is 17 December 2008.

Admission to In Memoriam: Remembering the Great War is free. The exhibition is open daily from 10.00am – 6.00pm.
