And while we were in Death Valley, the missionaries sent over a Christmas gift for us, and it was a horse's head. And this head was given as they called it "Christian Day Presento" - Christmas Day present. And Higaki came down, he was no longer in charge of us, but he came down and he gave us some cigarettes and a couple of small cigars and a little bit of medicine. Because he said: "I am Christian too" - and it turned out he was actually. And after a full day, with mixed air raids in between it, on Christmas Day of 1943 we had this horse's head for Christmas dinner. And it has become a standard greeting on Christmas cards for people of Rabaul - "Christmas dinner - horse's head". It's always remembered.
