On 24 August Williamson's battalion took part in an attack near Stirling Castle beside the Menin Road.

Manuscript - 'A Disturbing Journey'

"Again the sky was sullen as we swung off across the plain. Once more something malevolent hung in the air. In all that great amphitheatre no sign of life showed itself above ground. But lonely as we were, our platoon did not move unseen. From the encircling hills we felt that malignant eyes were marking our progress..."

"...The second night brought increased fury, and the bombardment was now unbroken and terrible. Overhead the sky was riven by perpetual uproar, by the throbbing and moaning of great shells on their way, while the ceaseless flickering of countless explosions, Very lights and rockets broke the darkness... Suddenly we became aware that through the incredible din a yet more frightful sound was coming. Bombardment by heavy trench mortar had been added. The air trembled as if a gigantic drum were beating, and the ground shook and heaved beneath our feet. Stupendous weights seemed to be dropping fifty yards away. We cowered in our trench, looking over towards the other platoon. Could anything live in that? Andrews and Daly were there, Steel, Bowes, Perry, Dillon, Firth..."
