- 'A Disturbing Journey'
"Again
the sky was sullen as we swung off across the plain. Once more
something malevolent hung in the air. In all that great amphitheatre
no sign of life showed itself above ground. But lonely as we were,
our platoon did not move unseen. From the encircling hills we
felt that malignant eyes were marking our progress..."

| "...The
second night brought increased fury, and the bombardment was now
unbroken and terrible. Overhead the sky was riven by perpetual uproar,
by the throbbing and moaning of great shells on their way, while
the ceaseless flickering of countless explosions, Very lights and
rockets broke the darkness... Suddenly we became aware that through
the incredible din a yet more frightful sound was coming. Bombardment
by heavy trench mortar had been added. The air trembled as if a
gigantic drum were beating, and the ground shook and heaved beneath
our feet. Stupendous weights seemed to be dropping fifty yards away.
We cowered in our trench, looking over towards the other platoon.
Could anything live in that? Andrews and Daly were there, Steel,
Bowes, Perry, Dillon, Firth..." |
