What was Utility wear?

Utility clothing was introduced in 1941 when the Government decided to ration all clothes. Clothes had to be designed and made from Government patterns so that the clothes were simple, plain and practical - and did not waste fabric. They were called 'utility clothes'.

Look up the word 'utility'.  Can you see why they chose this word to describe these clothes?
