Sailors eating breakfast in the mess

What did sailors eat?

Apart from civilians, people in the services (the Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force) also relied on rations. The sailors on board HMS Belfast had a daily ration.

The rations served to the sailors on board each day were as follows

10oz bread
8oz fresh meat
1lb vegetables
1oz butter
2oz sugar
1/2oz tea or coffee
1/2oz hot chocolate
3/4oz condensed milk
1oz jam, marmalade or pickles
4oz preserved meat
eighth of a pint of rum
