Children working in the vegetable plots at school

What are the children doing in this picture?

School and War Work

Many evacuees remember the freedom of the countryside and describe happy times exploring farms, orchards, gardens and fields, finding out about new plants and animals.

To help with the war effort school children were given a number of days off school to help with harvesting crops. Many schools even made their own vegetable gardens out of the school playing fields.

What other jobs do you think children could do to 'Dig for Victory'?
