The Evacuation
The government encouraged the evacuation of children from towns
and cities to safer areas of the countryside. But the air raids did
not come during the first few months of the war (the 'Phoney War')
and mothers were tempted to take their children home again.
Many evacuees were homesick and unhappy.
This poster gives the
instruction 'Don't do it, Mother - leave the children where they
are'. The government was sure that British towns and cities would be
bombed soon. If you look closely at the poster you will see Hitler.
Why do you think he is there? What is he doing?
