Benjimen Macrae was born in Chiswick of a white mother and a black African father. He was adopted when young and separated from his younger brother Ramsay whom he did not meet again until after the Second World War (see Lilian Bader's story in Women at War) He was called-up on in 1940 and sent to India for training. He participated in the Burma campaign and won the Military Medal.
