Making
codes
CODES
and CIPHERS can be very simple.
Some of the ideas shown here were first used over two thousand
years ago.

One way
of sending a message in code is to hide the words among
a jumble of other letters. Only someone who has the right
'cut-out' to put over the letters can reveal the secret.
|
|
This is how a
simple TRANSPOSITION or 'move-along' code works:
Take two strips
of paper and write the alphabet on each strip so that the letters
line up. Start with the first line of the alphabet, then put the
second alphabet underneath and move this along a few letters.

|
Now you can ENCODE (put into code) a message:
Look for the letters you need in the top alphabet and change these
to the letters below them in the moving 'code' alphabet. HINT:
your message should always start with the letter A. This tells
the person DECODING the message how far to move the bottom
code alphabet along - in this case, F=A, W=R, J=E - so the first
word is ARE... now you try!
|
| Now DECODE these messages:
FWJ
DTZ WJFID?
FHYNTS XYFYNTSX
