In January 1942 Japanese troops invaded Burma. Three and a half hard years of war followed, in which Allied troops fighting the Japanese endured harsh weather conditions, difficult terrain and disease, before finally liberating Burma in 1945

The Sound Archive has interviewed around 300 people about their experiences in Burma, including men and women serving with the armed forces and civilians. To read about the war and listen to extracts from a few of our interviews with soldiers who served in Burma click on the links opposite.

Extracts from some of our Burma interviews can also be found in the 'Imperial War Museum Book of the War in Burma, 1942-1945' by Julian Thompson.

All photographs featured on these pages are held by the Museum's Photograph Archive.
