Historial de la Grande Guerre

The Historial de la Grande Guerre was opened on 1 August 1992 in a new building attached to the medieval Château in Péronne.  It is an international museum which sets out to show the experiences of the major participants in the First World War not only the soldiers in the front line, but also the civilians who suffered occupation by an enemy force or had to flee their homes.  Trilingual signage and historical and geographical maps enable visitors to find their way throughout the galleries where, in addition to the original objects, some 60 video monitors present silent archival film footage documenting life at the front and behind the lines.

The Historial also has a Documentation Centre, open by appointment, which contains a large international archive on the First World War.
