Rolls of Honour are a written form of war memorial that might take the form of a published book, handwritten manuscript or framed list of names.
Royal Navy
The National Archives hold First World War casualty records in record classes ADM 242 and 104 (the latter also includes some Second World War Information). Casualty listings of Royal Navy officers and ratings can be found in the following editions of the Navy List:
- July 1915
- January and July 1916
- April and July 1917
- July 1918
For the Second World War, typescript listings provide Names of Officers who Died during the Period beginning 3rd September 1939 and ending 30th June 1948 and the Register of Deaths (Naval Ratings), 3rd September 1939 to 30th June 1948. These have been copied from the original sets held by the Royal Naval Museum at Portsmouth, and can be consulted in the Reading Room. Service personnel are filed alphabetically by surname. The information given includes the Port Division and, in the case of ratings, the official number, followed by branch of service, ship or unit, date and place of birth, cause, date and place of death and, occasionally, details of decorations and any further notes.
Two Rolls of Honour have also been published in connection with the Royal Marines Museum and Historical Society: With Full and Grateful Hearts: A Register of Royal Marines Deaths, 1914-1919 and A Register of Royal Marines War Deaths, 1939-1945.
