Rolls of Honour

The Imperial War Museum has a particularly good collection of rolls of honour and these should not be overlooked by the family historian. The 80 volumes of Soldiers Died in the Great War are the usual starting point in the Department of Printed Books for those family historians whose relatives died whilst serving with the Army.

The recently published Cross of Sacrifice series, compiled by S D and D B Jarvis are also extremely valuable - they draw on a variety of sources and include the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register number, thus giving easy access to additional information. Five volumes have been published so far, and as well as officers in various branches of the armed forces (including Colonial and Commonwealth forces) non-commissioned officers and men serving with the various Navies and Air Forces are included.

Generally speaking, more material is held relating to the Army and the collections tend to be weaker for the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Merchant Navy. If errors come to light which can be substantiated in any of the official volumes (with the number of casualties involved it was inevitable that some mistakes would be made) they are noted in pencil in the relevant books.
