The Church of Notre Dame de Brebières in Albert.  At the top of the tower was a golden figure of the Virgin Mary holding aloft the infant Jesus.  It was hit by a German shell and secured hanging at an angle by French engineers.  A local legend said that when the Virgin fell the war would end.  The Germans knocked it down during their spring offensive in 1918.  The church has since been completely restored.
