![]() The Church of Notre Dame de Brebières in Albert. At the top of the tower was a golden figure of the Virgin Mary holding aloft the infant Jesus. It was hit by a German shell and secured hanging at an angle by French engineers. A local legend said that when the Virgin fell the war would end. The Germans knocked it down during their spring offensive in 1918. The church has since been completely restored. (IWM neg no: Q 855). |
