So I was sent to Masham Camp near Ripon, and there I joined a very unusual corps, the Bantam Brigade. Did you know that in the First World War men who were under 5' 3" clamoured to join the army, and a division was formed of men who were just over 5 feet, all infantry, from various parts of the country, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Scotland - and I was with a Lancashire battalion. And these chaps, they were plucky. But some of them were lads who had sworn at the age of 16 that they were 19 and they began to grow - and so they had several Bantams who were nearly 6 feet high! |
