Description
Stone square pillar on three-stepped base and plinth with plaque and crossed flags; four squat stone posts surmounted by balls at each corner of base. Pillar is topped with stone ball and gilt flame. Tablet in shape of heavy cross is set into memorial plinth section. Lettering in black.

Condition
History
Largely destroyed by lightning in 1938, and rebuilt same year. Because of proximity to Chequers was camouflaged in WW2. Bronze plaque and decorations stolen 1972. Replaced by stone tablet, on which nine names additional to the original 148 were added, and iron flag. Badly damaged by lightning in early 1990s and repaired: lightning conductors now fitted. Names becoming illegible and there is a County Council appeal for c £70,000 for further restoration.
