- Description
- A wooden framed and glazed Roll of Honour. It is decorated with two parallel images of incense burners, slightly abstracted from their real form, in a faded powder-blue and cream, with a faded gilt border. ‘All Saints, South Elmham’ is emblazoned above the names of the Parish’s war-dead, the words are decorated with thin rays of golden light which form an approximate oval. The lettering, which alternates between black and red ink, appears to be printed though may also have been hand calligraphed.
- Inscription
- All Saints / South Elmham / ROLL OF HONOUR / THOSE WHO FOUGHT & WHO FELL / IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1919/ (Names) / LEST WE FORGET / God gave us men who fought the fight,/ Subdued the foe whose RIGHT was MIGHT. / Not for gain they bled and died, / Ambition, self, or lustful pride. / They sacrificed at duty’s call, / Their every thought, surrendered all. / Oh ye who by their labours gain, / Sometimes pause midst pleasures vain. / And give a thought at Eventide, / To those who fought, & bled, & died. //
