  • Aberdeen Press and Journal - Thursday 25 February 1915 The Nurse and the Red Rose Without any ceremony, and almost unobserved, the Florence Nightingale statue in Pall Mall was unveiled this morning. Three workmen climbed ladders, and pulled off the canvas cover. That was all, but the statue has been much admired during the day. Two of the four bronze panels on the granite base show her in the hospital at Scutari—one shows her among a group nurses, and the other bears her name and the dates of her birth and death. A motor car drew up, and a nurse stepped out. She placed on the granite step a spray of lilac with a single red rose in the centre.
