Description
Large marble tablet with a triangular pediment and a kneeling figure set against it. It is supported by two corbels and the lettering is in black.
Inscription
TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN PETER ELIGE, SURGEON IN THE ARMY, WHO DIED 11th NOV 1805 AGED 76 YEARS, HAVING SERVED IN TWO GERMAN WARS AND IN THE AMERICAN WAR. MOST INDEFATIGABLE IN HIS PROFESSION AND THE SOLDIER'S FRIEND. ALSO OF JOHN PETER ELIGE, SON OF THE ABOVE, CAPTN IN THE ROYAL ARTILLARY, WHO WAS KILLED AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE STORMING OF THE FORTS AT SALAMANCA IN SPAIN ON 19th JUNE 1812 AGED 32 YEARS AND WAS INTERRED WITH MILITARY HONOURS IN THE GROUND OF A CONVENT. TO A MOST AMIABLE DISPOSITION WERE UNITED ALL THOSE QUALITIES WHICH NEVER FAIL TO GAIN ESTEEM. HIS MERITS MAYBE APPRECIATED FROM THE FOLLOWING EXTRACT OF A LETTER ADDRESSED TO HIS AFFLICTED MOTHER BY A SUPERIOR OFFICER: "CAPT ELIGE'S UNBLEMISHED CHARACTER AS A GENTLEMAN, AND UNSULLIED HONOUR AS A SOLDIER, WILL EVER BE REMEMBERED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM. THIS TRIBUTE I BEG TO OFFER AS COMING FROM HIS COMRADES IN ARMS WHO DESIRE TO DO JUSTICE TO HIS MEMORY; AND I AM DEPUTED BY THEM TO OFFER THIS GRATEFUL COMMUNICATION."
