  • Northern Whig, Thursday 6th November 1902 (page 7) reported: 'Lady Galway, says the "Military Mail," has carried out a very pretty idea in having a part of the grounds at Serlby Park turned into what is in future to be known the "Yeoman’s Garden." The garden lies close to the lake, and in it stands an urn more than seven feet high, bearing the following inscription: "This monument is erected by Vere Viscountess Galway in honour and loving memory of those Sherwood Rangers, 10th Company, 3rd Batt., I.Y., who fell in South Africa, 1901-1902." It is a very quaint, secluded spot, overshadowed by trees, a charming way of keeping green the memory of those who have died for their country'. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000434/19021106/139/0007
  • Mansfield and Ashfield Recorder ?/ 25 April 2002 Report on unveiling.
  • Nottingham Evening Post, Saturday 18th October 1902 (page 5) reported: 'MEMORIAL TO THE FALLEN SHERWOOD RANGERS. It was mentioned in these columns in connection with the Coronation celebration at Serlby Park, that Viscountess Galway had set apart a portion of the grounds near the lake, which were in future to be known as the "Yeomen's Garden." At that time an urn, which was being fashioned for her ladyship in London, had not arrived, but it has now been received and placed in position upon a pedestal. It stands 7ft.6in. in height, and is erected in memory of the fallen Sherwood Rangers in the late war. On the four sides of the pedestal is the following inscription: This monument is erected by Vere, Viscountess Galway, in honour and in loving memory of those of the Sherwood Rangers, 10th Company, 3rd Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, Who fell in South Africa, 1900-1902. Lieutenant A. Williams. Sergt. A. F. Tomlinson; Trooper R. W. Bond. Corpl. G. Duckmanton; Trooper E. J. Mackinder. Lance-CorpL G.W. Webb; Trooper F. Kempster. Trooper G. Pepper; Trooper F. Kirk. Trooper A. F. Clarke; Trooper J. Hall. Trooper F. Bell; Trooper J. H. Bowness Trooper H. Oglesby; Trooper F. E. Lowless. It is pretty well known how actively her ladyship interested herself in the regiment at the time the active service companies were formed, and this last kindly act of hers will be deeply appreciated by all, more particularly those related to the fallen. Colonel Viscount Galway was in Retford yesterday, but is returning to London, where he will one of the acting A.D.C.'s to the King in the Royal procession on Saturday next'. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000321/19021018/067/0005
