  • The Scotsman - Monday 27 August 1923 www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000540/19230827/190/0004 A Beautiful War Memorial. Needless to say, Dornoch has its war memorial. One hates to measure sentiment by money, but it is, I think, worthy of mention that this small community raised £ 1700 for the purpose of erecting, its memorial, Dornoch, during the Great War, contributed its quota, and indeed more than its quota, to tlis fighting forces of the Crown. How many of these fell far from tlieir northern homes the war memorial bears record. It stands on an eminence just beyond the town, and commands a wide view of sea and land. The design is that of a kilted soldier, who shades his eyes with his hand as he looks wistfully bact towards the battlefield for the comrades who will never return. It is a fine idea , and finely carried out, Below the scroll of names are inscribed the following impressive lines: On fame's eternal camping ground Their silent tents are spread, And glory guards with solemn sound The bivouac of the dead.
  • Northern Whig - Monday 16 July 1923 www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001542/19230716/146/0006 PORTRAIT GALLERY The fine specimens of sculpture attracted her Majesty, and particularly large life sized design of Scottish soldier, which is intended as a war memorial for Dornoch, Sutherlandshire. At the Portrait Gallery, to which the public had also been admitted, observation was made of portraits of the Stuarts and of Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. There were many things of Scottish interest seen the Museum Antiquities, where their Majesties were received Mr. J. Graham Callender, director of the Museum, and Mr. James Curle, member of the Council of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
