Description
Chapel founded as a Thanksgiving for the safe return of James Stanley, Bishop of Ely who was a former Warden of the Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George in Manchester and Sir John Stanley from the Battle of Flodden Field. Known as the Derby Chapel, it was handed to the Manchester Regiment as a Regimental Chapel by the Earl of Derby in 1936. Army reorganisations in 1956 (merger of the Manchester Regiment with the King's (Liverpool) Regiment) and 2006 (Merger of the King's into the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment) led to successive changes in its name. The Chapel houses a number of War Memorials mostly dedicated to the Manchester Regiment, including the Shrines displaying the Rolls of Honour of The Manchester Regiment and the King's Regiment, along with other plaques and tablets. Most of the furnishings carry dedications, some of which qualify them as individual War Memorials. The Chapel was largely destroyed by enemy bombing in 1940, and there is a photographic display of the Chapel before and after that event. As part of the restoration a new East window was commissioned, which suffered damage in the 1996 bombing of Manchester city centre and was subsequently repaired.
