Condition
History
In 1954, concerned residents of the Leeman Road District approached the City of York Council because the community war memorial in Balfour Street had not been maintained and it was also subject to vandalism. They asked that it should be moved to a public garden on Salisbury Terrace. While the Council ascertained who was responsible for the maintenance, it agreed to cut the grass and weed the area around the memorial. Information for the responsibility was not forthcoming and, as there were no public objections, the cost of the removal and erection (£120) was met by Council's Parks & Small Holdings Committee.
