Description
Interior wooden porches with double doors serving the main doors of the church, on the North and South side. Both have a tracery balcony on the top, above six panels, containing a number of Coats of Arms. Those on the South side depict: from the left: the Wigan coat of arms, gold on a red shield; the red rose of Lancaster in a golden circle; the Royal Standard on a shield; the English Lions, gold, on a red shield; a gold Fleur de Lys on a red circle; the coat of arms of Lancashire, gold and red, on a shield. Beneath them runs an inscribed Dedication. The crest on the North side are unaccompanied by an inscription. Below the crests there are two panels coming out from the wall on each side, and there are six panels, four of which form the doors, along the front, and the panelling is divided into three sections, with fluting in each panel. There is an adjacent full-length three-bay oak board, with upper and lower sections below carved arches. The central arch has at its centre the cross of St George on a shield surmounted by a crown, and surrounded by a laurel wreath. Each of the side arches has a cross on a shield on their outside edges, and a saltire in a shield on the inner edges. The central upper panel has the dedication, with some names below. Another set of names are on the central lower panel. The remainder of the names are on the side panels. All the inscriptions are incised and unpainted.

  • Wigan Observer, 01/09/1921: Reprint from the Parish Magazine regarding the Church's proposed memorial. States that Mr Caroe's design for the memorial has been on display on the church noticeboard for the past month. The proposal is for a twenty-one- foot high stone cross in the churchyard. The material, to withstand Wigan's caustic atmosphere has yet to be decided. Also yet to be decided is whether the 114 or more names will fit, as proposed, on the memorial's steps, or whether they should be inscribed on panels in the baptistry, with only a general inscription on the cross. A list of the names so far submitted for inscription is given.
  • Wigan Observer, 11/03/1922: Reprint from the Parish Magazine regarding the Church's proposed memorial. The Church Council had decided to go ahead with having the names of the fallen inscribed on the panels in the baptistry without delay, and to leave a decision on the full memorial until the town had completed its deliberations about its own memorial. A list of names submitted for the memorial would be placed in the porch, so that additions and corrections might be made.
