Description
THE BASE IS OF GREY GRANITE WITH TWO FIGURES IN BRONZE REPRESENTING WAR AND DEATH SEATED ON A PROJECTION EITHER SIDE- WAR, WITH SWORD IN HAND ON THE LEFT, DEATH WITH A PALL AND GATHERED ROSES ON THE RIGHT. BENEATH, ON COPPER PANELS, ARE FIGURES OF AN OFFICER AND PRIVATE OF THE REGIMENT IN SERVICE UNIFORM ON EITHER SIDE, AND THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WAR. THE WHOLE IS SURMOUNTED BY A FIGURE REPRENTING FAME STANDING TRIUMPHANT OVER WAR AND DEATH, HOLDING IN HER RIGHT HAND THE PALM OF VICTORY AND IN HER LEFT A WREATH OF LAURELS. ON THE FRONT FACE AT TOP, ALSO IN COPPER, IS THE BADGE OF THE REGIMENT, THE CASTLE OF INNISKILLING, WITH THREE TURRETS FLANKED ON EITHER SIDE WITH THE SPHINX AND WHITE HORSE, AND ON A SCROLL "THE ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS" A GRAND, HEROIC FIGURE IN A SWIRLING MANTLE HOLDING ALOFT THE CROWN OF VICTORY WITH BROODING FIGURES CROUCHING OR SITTING ON MINOR PLINTHS ON EITHER SIDE(ROWAN).
Inscription
TO COMMEMORATE THE GALLANT CONDUCT OF THE ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS IN THE BOER WAR, 1899, 1900-1-2. THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY THEIR MANY FRIENDS AND ADMIRERS, IN THIS THEIR NATIVE REGIMENTAL DISTRICT AND ELSEWHERE, TO ALL THE OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE REGIMENT WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THAT ARDUOUS CAMPAIGN, IN THE HOPE THAT THOSE WHO SUCCEED THEM MAY CHERISH CLEARLY THE SPLENDID ACHIEVEMENTS OF THEIR PREDECESSORS AND ENDEAVOUR ON ALL OCCASIONS TO BE WORTHY OF THEIR GRAND INHERITANCE.
