Description
Rectangular cream coloured tablet inset mounted to dark backboard. Inscription at top and names for First World War in two columns below. Inscription and names for Second World War at bottom. The tablet features a decorative incised laurel and foliate border. Two supporting corbels at base of backboard. The memorial also covers Siddick and Barepot.

He lived at 85 Northside JOSEPH H CRAINE Private Craine, 241174, 7th Border Regiment, died on 2 June 1918 aged 23. He was the son of Philip Alfred and Jane Craine of Dock House, Workington He is buried in grave II L25 at Auchonvillers Military Cemeteery, France HARRY CROSTHWAITE Private Crosthwaite, 12517 of 8th Border Regiment was killed in action between 23 and 24 March 1918 aged 20 He was son of Joseph and Annie Crosthwaite of 99 Northside He is buried in grave III J 66 of Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France THOMAS CURWEN Private Curwen, 14638, of 7th Border Regiment was killed in action on 15 February 1916 aged 20. He was the son of Mrs Elizabeth Curwen of 36 Middle Row, Northside ERNEST EDWARD DAVIDSON Sapper Davidson, 148376 of the Royal Engineers was killed in action on 12 October 1917. He lived at 10 Oldside JAMES GIBSON Lance Corporal Gibson, 24460, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, was killed in action on 19 July 1916. He lived at Barepot Crossings LEONARD G GUEST Private Guest, 26931 of 11th Border Regiment, died from wounds on 12 July 1917. He lived at Spring Bank, Northside JOHN HOLMES Lance Corporal Holmes, 6150 of 2nd Border Regiment, was killed in action on 4 July 1916. He lived at 8 Front Row, Northside THOMAS SHEPHERD [or Sheppard] Corporal Sheppard, 3873 1st Border Regiment, was killed in action on 1 June 1915. He lived at 50 Middle Row, Northside FRANK SPRING Private Spring, 148483, Machine Gun Corps, was killed in action on 22 October 1918. He lived at 81 Northside WILLIE STEPHENSON Sapper Stephenson, 44286, Royal Engineers, was killed in action on 13 October 1916. He lived at 26 Mason Street, Workington NATHAN TEMPLETON Private Templeton, 15828, 8th Border Regiment, was killed in action on 3 July 1916. He lived at 92 Northside JOHN WILLIAM THIRLWELL Private Thirlwell, 18926, 1st Border Regiment was killed in action on 14 July 1916. He lived at 45 Senhouse Street, Siddick. 1939-1945 THOMAS LINTON Seaman Thomas Linton, LT/KX 101342 of the Royal Naval Patrol Service was lost at sea on HM Trawler Thuringia on 28 May 1940, aged 20. He had been born on 3 June 1919 He lived at Brick Row, Northside, Workington. He was the son of Henry and Ruth M Linton (nee Holmes, married 1917). He is commemorated on the Lowestoft Naval Memorial. JOHN COCKTON Lance Corporal John Cockton, 2618085 of the 5th Battalion Grenadier Guards died in Tunisia on 30 April 1943 aged 26 He lived at Northside, Workington. He was the son of Nicholas A and Minnie M Cockton and the husband of Lilian (nee Parkinson-married 1942.) He is buried in grave V G 16 at Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia. Lilian remarried William Croall in 1950. They had 2 children-Margaret A in 1950 and William in 1952 JOHN W FORSTER Corporal John William Forster, 3594724, of the West Yorkshire Regiment, died in India on 7 June 1944, aged 35. He was the son of Samuel and Blanche Forster and the husband of Marion (nee Gardiner, born 22 May 1914 married in the Carlisle area in 1933) The Borough Roll of Honour has his address as Salterbeck. In 1939 they lived at 25 Shore Road, Workington He is buried in grave 3G7 at Imphal War Cemetery They had 5 children- Heather B 1934 Maureen 1937 Patricia and Sheila born 24 July 1939 June 1942 Marion remarried and became James Menhams in 1946. She died in 1977 There were further children- James B in 1949 (died an infant) and James M in 1951
