- Whitehaven News 11 November 1926 page 2e- for the unveiling
- Note that the William Bell on this memorial, is a non-com by the CWGC. He was William Robinson Bell- 1188 5th Border Regiment, shown as William Bell on his service record, but William R Bell on his medal card. He was discharged on 5 August 1916 due to severe hearing problems, returned to work an Iron Ore Miner at Salter Quarry, Frizington and died in April 1917, buried without headstone in grave 2I110 at Whitehaven Cemetery, where his paternal grandfather had been superintendent, The Whitehaven news states that his death at Whitehaven Infirmary was due to war wounds, and the Cemetery Register states that he was a soldier in the 5th Borders.
- Whitehaven News 29 May 1924 page 5e-Death of Mr Peter Kennedy 24 May 1924 (who is on the memorial)-wounded 3 times and eventually a Prisoner of War. He never recovered his strength from the effects of the war and eventually died of TB. He is buried at St Joseph's RC Churchyard, Frizington.
- West Cumberland Times 22 January 1927 page 5g, 12 February 1927 page 3b & 5 March 1927 page 12f-g for the dispute about the cost of the wall (this also gives the names of the War Memorial Committee)
