Condition
History
Conservation work was required on the memorial including repairs, cleaning, refurbishment of the name plaque and re-application of the gold leaf on the sword. Weathering had damaged the memorial and it was covered with a deep rooted fungus. The memorial plaque had been defaced and the lettering was unreadable. In addition the area around the memorial required works. Changes to the road around the memorial meant it had become susceptible to water damage as the road level had been raised to level with the memorial and as such water splashed onto the column which was particularly damaging to the stone in winter when salt laid to protect against frost ended up on the memorial. The memorial was also surrounded by metal railings to prevent cattle straying onto it. These had deteriorated with rust and need to be replaced. The Llangunllo War Memorial Association was formed in 1996 to raise the money needed to carry out the work. The total sum of £7,000 was raised. War Memorials Trust gave them £250 towards the project. The Western Front Association also contributed with £250. The work of the restoration was carried out entirely by volunteers from the community. The name of Gunner George Reynolds, who died in the Second World War, was added to the memorial during the restoration.
