Description
Wooden screen with names inscribed behind twelve wooden doors. Inscription on a gold background in black painted lettering. Within the screen are a number of doors on the outside of some are unit badges (as on this one) inside the doors are panels painted with lists of names for that unit (these may also be on the inside of the door). The stained glass window, which is also part of this overall scheme, is our reference 30648.

  • BLACKBURN RED CROSS HONOURS (Extracted from the Blackburn Times: 17 and 24 April 1920, and Blackburn Weekly Telegraph 17 April 1920)-The Roll of honourable service which was prepared by the British Red Cross Society contained the names of 19 Blackburn members who each received a letter from Dr. T. Wheeler Hart, of Manchester, County Director of the East Lancashire Branch which read: “It is with very great pleasure that I forward to you the enclosed certificate of Honourable Service, showing that your name has been inscribed upon the Roll of Honourable Service, in recognition of your splendid service during the war. I congratulate you most sincerely upon this well-deserved honour which has been conferred upon you by the British Red Cross Society—an honour which has been indeed well earned—and at the same time I should like to express the grateful thanks of the county headquarters for the magnificent work which you carried out on behalf of the Society during the trying days of the war" The names are as follows: Mrs R.Y. Aitken, joint matron, Ellerslie Hospital, and commandant. Mrs J.W. Carter, comforts section. Mr John Dewsnap, secretary men's detachment. Miss E.M. Dugdale quartermaster, Ellerslie Hospital. Mrs H.   • On our reference 90486 is a lady not commemorated here- One of those commemorated is ELIZABETH T. GILCHRIST M.D. who is not on CWGC or the Scottish National War Memorial. The British Medical Journal (16 September 1893) has a note of her being appointed Resident Medical Officer in Grove Street Hospital for Women and Children in Edinburgh. Miss Gilchrist, Elizabeth T. LRCP&S Edinburgh. LFPS Glasgow. A bit more on this lady at smsec.rcpe.ac.uk/registration-form/gilchrist-elizabeth-taylor note the MD qualification from Belgium. She died of pneumonia at home in Finnart Street on 25 October 1919. She appears in PO Directories for Greenock in 1904-1907 at 22 Finnart Street as Physician and Surgeon
