Description
A tall and uncommon cross, having Celtic tracery at the head of the cross on the south and north faces. The square column of the cross rests on a square plinth, which rests on a three-stepped base that has a stone vase at the south-west and south-east corners . The memorial is surrounded by a low chain fence, strung from low concrete pillars.

History
2017: The area around the Memorial was revamped; the Memorial itself was professionally cleaned and the stone engravings made clearer in time for Remembrance Day 2017. The floodlight was replaced by an uplighter, and the planting of annuals on the border of the path was replaced with perennials and roses./ 2006: Parish Council completed 2 years of garden renovations, which included new gate pillars and new railings, and the replacement of old large conifers with new smaller ones. / 6/11/2001: The memorial was Grade II Listed (List Entry Number 1389546).

Decorated cross with engraved stonework extending down into the slender tapered shaft. Base of rectangular podium with recessed panel bearing names of 1914-1918 war dead: IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN OF STANSTED WHO FELL IN THE FIRST GREAT WAR.   • Herts and Essex Observer 9/6/1945 reported: 'WAR CHARITIES ACT, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that it is proposed to apply to the Essex County Council for the Registration under the above-mentioned Act of STANSTED WELCOME HOME AND WAR MEMORIAL FUND, the objects of which are shortly as follows: 1. The names of the fallen from Stansted Parish to be engraved on the existing War Memorial. 2. Public Welcomes and personal presents to returning members of the Forces from Stansted Parish. men and women, in the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and Merchant Navy. Also the next of kin of those who died on service to be recipients of the present. 3. Balance of Total Fund. a. To be administered for the benefit of Ex-Servicemen and women or their dependents or next-of-kin, through a Special Committee appointed by the Stansted Branch of the British Legion on which the Parish Council shall be represented, and/or b. Towards the formation or equipment of a Community Association or Community Centre. And the administrative centre of which is situate at Halfway, Millfields, Stansted Essex.
