Notes

Original intention at the time of the opening of the park was to erect a Memorial gateway and shrine at the Hackwood Road entrance of the park. Decided later that the principal entrance to the park should be from London Road and Memorial and entrance should be erected in that position. Gates are made of wrought iron with bronze decoration. Memorial is constructed in Portland stone and stands on a circular platform four steps above the ground level. On each of its four side is a circular entablature supported by stone pilasters forming panels with a space beneath each for flowers. In the front panel, towards the entrance, is worked an emblematic stone cross with In Memoriam inscribed on the architrave above, and the date A.D. 1914-1918 on the base above the cross. A bronze shield beneath the cornice of the entablature over the cross bears the Arms of the Borough depicting St Michael and the Dragon. The three other panels contain bronze tablets bearing the names of the 234 men who paid the supreme sacrifice, and in whose honour a bronze figure of Victory surmounts the Monument shewn in the act of alighting to place a laurel wreath in their memory. Bronze figure is a gift from four anoymous subscribers.
