Description

CENTRAL RAISED CENOTAPH SURMOUNTED BY A STONE CASKET. BEHIND IS A SEMI-CIRCULAR WALL BEARING NAMES OF THE FALLEN ON BRONZE PANELS. ENTRANCE IS FLANKED BY PEDESTALS BEARING SCULPTED FIGURES REPRESENTING SEATED ARMY VICKERS GUNNER (LEFT) AND ROYAL NAVY LEWIS GUNNER (RIGHT). 'PEACE OR CONFLICT' TABLET MOUNTED TO FRONT PEDASTAL OF ARMY VICKERS GUNNER FIGURE. CENOTAPH SURMOUNTED BY AN URN. RELIEF PANELS ON EACH FACE OF THE CENOTAPH DEPICTING WARTIME SCENES. Stone panels with the names of fallen WW2 military personnel have been added to the memorial, together with the names of 610 Portsmouth residents who died during WW2

Cenotaph: THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF PORTSMOUTH IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THOSE WHO IN THE GLORIOUS MORNING OF THEIR DAYS FOR ENGLAND'S SAKE LOST ALL BUT ENGLAND'S PRAISE. MAY LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE UPON THEM / THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN HONOUR OF PORTSMOUTH'S SONS WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 / IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR II 1939-45. 2003: Addition of 'Peace or Conflict' Tablet to pedastal of Army Vickers figure. OCTOBER 1984 SURVEY: SOME BRONZE STAINING. OPEN JOINTS IN MASONRY AT RANDOM AREAS. SOME EDGES OF DEFECTIVE STONE AND STONE PAVINGS AT RANDOM INFORMATION TAKEN FROM SURVEY CARRIED OUT BY PORTSMOUTH CITY MUSEUMS DEPARTMENT AND DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND CIVIC DESIGN IN 1984. SEE FILE FOR COMPLETE INDEXED DOCUMENT WITH 59 ENTRIES, INCLUDING THOSE RELATING TO NON-MILITARY MEMORIALS IN THE CITY. CONDITION ASSESSMENTS TRANSFERRED DIRECTLY: A = URGENT = POOR.
