TO THE MEMORY/ OF JAMES HARRISON BAKER/ MAJOR OF THE 34TH REGIMENT/ SECOND SON OF RICHARD BAKER DD RECTOR OF THIS PARISH/ AND ELIZABETH HIS WIFE/ WHO FELL IN THE BATTLE OF TOULOUSE ON THE 10TH OF APRIL 1814/ AS HE WAS GALLANTLY LEADING HIS MEN AGAINST AN ENTRENCHMENT/ IN THE 33RD YEAR OF HIS AGE./ THE EXCELLENT CONDUCT OF THIS DESERVING OFFICER DURING 16 YEARS/ SERVICE IN JERSEY, THE CAPE AND INDIA ALWAYS GAINED HIM/ THE COMMENDATION OF HIS SUPERIORS AND IN THE PENINSULA/ HIS COURAGE, ENTERPRISE AND ABILITY WERE SO CONSPICUOUS/ THAT THEY WERE ACKNOWLEDGED AND RECORDED./ HE LIVED 28 HOURS TO HEAR OF THE GLORIOUS DELIVERANCE OF/ EUROPE FROM A DESOLATING AND DEGRADING TYRANNY./ NOR WAS HE LESS DISTINGUISHED IN PRIVATE LIFE FOR HIS/ AMIABLE AND ATTRACTIVE VIRTUES, MODEST, HUMBLE, GENTLE.
