Description
The basis of the memorial is the Boer War Memorial unveiled in 1905, beneath a stone sculpture of a soldier in Boer War uniform. The statue is set upon a multi-layered plinth, with a stone pillar in the centre of the top section carrying a ram's head, the town symbol, at its capital, and the date 1904 on its base. There is an array of three tablets on the three visible sides on the two lower levels. The central tablet of the upper of those levels carries the dedication, and the panel below it carries the names of those who died in the Boer War. The four panels on the two side faces carry the names of men who served in various units in the war. On each flank of this memorial three modern granite tablets have been installed. Those on the southern (left) flank commemorate the fallen of WW1, and those on the right the fallen of WW2. In front of the memorial a sandstone tablet has been installed in the ground to commemorate Pte. Norman Harvey VC, who won his VC in WW1, and was killed in action in WW2.

Costs

Comments: The Memorial was funded out of the £800 surplus in the town's Boer War Relief Fund. A sum was also earmarked for the building of a cottage hospital, but no building took place. Following the Great War a Memorial Hospital was built - see WMR 62542.
