Description
A square limestone pillar and pedestal on a sandstone base and plinth, accompanied by later limestone tablets. The pillar has a moulded cornice at the head with a dentilated frieze below it, with various cornices and designs on each face below, including a Latin cross at the centre and a wreath at the base, both in relief. The pedestal has a plain capstone at the top, a moulded frieze at the bottom with hollowed upper surface, and recessed panels on each face containing the names in three columns. The octagonal base comprises an ashlar sandstone wall, the top course dressed and the lower two rough hewn. Its 9 o'clock face is replaced by a limestone tablet bearing the WW2 inscription. The top surface of the base has a layer of limestone chippings, upon which are laid four limestone tablets bearing the names of WW2 and subsequent casualties. The plinth forms an octagonal shallow step of dressed sandstone. The whole was originally surrounded by a low chain railing, now lost. The inlaid inscriptions are in different styles of upright capital lettering.
