Description
Probably an eight-light window accompanied by a plaque, but a nearby six-light window may also be part of the memorial. The almost square window is divided into four horizontally and two vertically, the resulting eight lights being separated by plain, heavy sandstone mullions and transoms. The top four lights contain stained glass armorial shields and mottos of four aristocratic houses associated with the founding of the school: from left to right, Cavendish, De Rodes,Sitwell and Frechville. The lower four lights contain stained glass depictions of four prominent Elizabethans: from left to right, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Phillip Sidney and Sir Richard Grenville. Below this window is a wide bronze plaque mounted on the dado panelling. It has a narrow raised moulded border and bears an inscription with names in four columns, all in raised capital block lettering against a stippled ground. In the south wall of the room is a six-light window containing stained glass images, with bound laurel leaves in the three top lights and St George, St Christopher and St Nicolas at the bottom. It is of similar design and is executed by the same artist at a similar time, and it seems likely that it forms part of this memorial. The artists' names are inscribed in the bottom right corner of the second lower light of each window.
