Description
Battered Portland stone column on a three-step sandstone base, surmounted by a cast bronze figure of an Army officer in full battlefield uniform looking into the distance, holding binoculars in his left hand and his pistol in his right hand, whilst on the steps below the column a cast figure of a woman stretches out her right hand which is holding a laurel branch, the tip of which touches the officer's foot, which is resting on a German pickelhaube helmet. Around the top of the column runs a cast bronze frieze depicting four military scenes in semi-relief - to the front a troop of marching soldiers; then a group of airmen readying a biplane for a sortie; to the rear a group of soldiers with camels; then a gun crew loading a naval gun. A quotation runs round the column beneath the frieze. The main inscription is incised on a marble tablet on the front of the column.
