- Description
- Tall, tapered pillar of granite sections on a plinth and base comprising large granite blocks within a circular grassed enclosure surrounded by a paved walkway and iron railings. The pillar has carved depictions of maidens - possibly holding lifeboat rings - in Egyptian style at its top section below a gilded flame with a carved depiction of a gilded sun rising from the sea at the base of the pillar with stone sculptures of classical figures depicting water, earth, sea and fire at each corner. The plinth has sculptures of a pair of naval engineers and a pair of stokers on two sides with sculptures of a poppy within laurel wreath on the alternate two sides. There are inscriptions above each of the laurel wreaths. An interpretative plaque was installed in front of the North face of the memorial in 2012.
