- Description
- In the North Nave an equestrian monument with effigy of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) Sculpted marble and cast bronze monument surmounted by a bronze equestrian statue, consisting of a large multi-columned enclosure. Above this is a round-arched canopy supporting a central cube with bronze panels, motif of the Order of the Garter, decorated corner columns and large flanking allegorical figures ('Valour and Cowardice', 'Truth and Falsehood'). The enclosure contains an elaborately cast bronze sarcophagus with a full-size recumbent effigy of the Duke of Wellington. Around the bronze base are tablets in relief, with the name of a battle on each one.
