- Description
- In the South Transept, over entrance to the Crypt, an elaborate group in high relief: Valour lays an American flag on the tomb of Ross upon which Britannia is recumbent in years. Fame descends with a laurel to crown his bust. Carved marble wall panel of horizontal format (width approximately one and a quarter times height) carved with figures in high relief of a naked man and two female allegories around a bust of the commemorated. On the left a naked man with a lion's skin around his loins, a club at his foot, his left knee resting on the base, pulls at the drapery beneath the bust. On the right, below, a woman in a plumed helmet and long mantle (Britannia), a shield behind her, crouches before the plinth. Behind a bare-breasted female angel holds a palm branch and a semi-circular wreath over the bust. The bust stands on a plinth with rounded outline; it represents a man, his head looking directly forward, in Roman drapery. Behind to the right is a standard and the main inscription is on the podium below.
